My buddy just bought a 1998 pontoon boat with a 3.0 135 HP merc I/O. The boat had not been run for about two years prior to him buying it. So far it runs pretty good. We have changed plugs, and Seafoamed the engine and carburetor but there is still a slight lag when you go to full throttle from a stand still. The only thing I can think of is the fuel filter. He bought a new filter but, we are unable to find the filter on the engine. Can anyone help with the location of the filter on the motor listed above? Also if anyone has any ideas about what else could be causing the momentary lag in the motor at throttle up would you please let me know. I would greatly appriciate any help.

Thanks and Happy boating!!

Re: Help Please!!

Dirty carb and or bad accelerator pump. Carb rebuild time. Spraying SeaFoam through the throat of the carb is not cleaning the carb. It needs to be removed, disassembled, thoroughly cleaned and reassembled with a new kit.

Re: Help Please!!

OK I can buy the carb may need to be rebuilt and the accelerator pump could be bad from sitting for two years. The seafoam helped the boat to idle better and we were able to get it on the water. I wondered if the carb needed some TLC. How difficult is it to rebuild a marine carb? I have done a few vehicle carbs and dont imagine that a marine carb sould be much different....is it? Also do you know where the fuel filter is usualy located I would think that it should be on the motor before the fuel pump but, it's not.

Re: Help Please!!

You are correct, a marine carb is no more difficult than an auto carb.

As for the fuel filter, you'll just need to follow the fuel line from the carb all the way to the tank, till you find it. If the filter you bought is one of the water seperating canister types, then you may not find one on your engine. They were not always installed on the 3.0's
