Hi, I have a 2005 Stingray 195LS with the 4.3 Volvo Penta with SX drive. 110 hours. End of season last year, there was a "knocking type noise" at idle from engine/drive area. Dealer where purchased said it was gimble bearing. Replaced gimble bearing. Then we had vibration on straightaways really bad in floor, but if we trimmed up some, it mostly went away, but on turns, vibration was really bad. They replaced the whole driveshaft assembly. We winterized and did not try afterward.

This year we took it out, and same vibrations. Took it to another boat place. They said it needed a gimble bearing again!! We had to replace it again. Took it out, and vibration still there. Took it back and they said they need to replace u-joints. So we paid to have the u-joints replaced again. Vibration still there now.

HELP!!!

Problem is this, when at 3/4 to full throttle and trim all the way down, strong vibration you can feel and hear through the boat. Trim up some and it goes away some, but still there. No matter where the trim is on turns, bad vibration and it gets worse the more you turn.

The dealer says the alignment was checked and Gimble and u-joints replaced, but no difference. What can be going on?

Thanks!

Re: Help - Please

Just a guess, but check out the propeller for knicks or dents, and check to make sure it's not loose on the hub or any such nonsense.

I had one loosen up, but it was way older than yours. Stillllll

Also, if it were me I'd pull the drive and check the allignment.

The gimbal should give you years of service if the bellows are good...where is the water coming from??

Prop is brand new and tight.

Re: Help - Please

One thing that was odd is the shop said they replaced the u-joints on the NEW driveshaft assemble. Everywhere I check, it says the new driveshafts have non-serviceable u-joints.

I wonder what they did?

Re: Help - Please

Could possibly be a bad yoke or hub. Did you hit anything? or maybe accidently shifted from drive to reverse too fast? When was the last time the oil was changed in the drive unit? What kind of oil was used and did it have the correct amount of oil in it?

yoke was replaced when whole driveshaft was replaced. Never hit anything. Oil was changed with Volvo Penta synthetic gear oil.

Is there suppose to be any noticeable vibration on turns? Or when 3/4 to full throttle with trim down?

You sure it's not the prop cavitating? I have a 01 Stingray, if I'm trying to cruise at 3/4 throttle and the drive is trimmed down I have a vibration in the floor, I just trim up till it goes away, and gains some mph, I don't think it's meant to cruise with the drive trimmed all the way down unless you're just putting along. What prop are you running?

Hello!

I am using a brand new Volvo Penta prop, 23 pitch (which is what came with the boat). So you have a pretty strong vibration in floor, and trim up and it mostly goes away? hmmmm.

Do you have vibration on turns? Further to lock, more vibration?

Re: Help - Please

Yes, that describes my ride. I don't get any vibration from turning though, if I have it trimmed up too much it will ventilate in a sharp turn. From a standstill if I go full throttle it wont vibrate until it gets some speed, haven't paid too much attention to what speed though, probably about 25-30 MPH. When my friends are driving I know when they don't have it trimmed up enough for the speed they are going because I can feel it. I just tell them to give some up trim and when it stops I say that's good. Did you have any vibration with the old prop? Stainless? Was it the same brand, as in volvo? If you trim the vibration away does it come back in the turn? Try the old prop if you have one.

I use aliminum props. I never had vibration on turns until the gimble and driveshaft was replaced. Now that they were replaced twice, still have vibration, so I tried a new prop, no luck.

Vibration on straightaway with trim down, do you get a pretty good vibration you and feel and hear? This may be my same issue, but the vibration on turns is got me worried.

Re: Help - Please

Dont hear the vibration, but I can definitely feel it. Did you take the prop off and check to see that the shaft is not bent? Also check that bushing/spacer that's behind the prop, make sure it's installed correctly. It will go on in either direction but only one way is correct.

Re: Help - Please

Have you tried the mystingray web page. There may be someone there who can help you, or had similiar problem. I have a stingray and they are very helpful. Sounds to me lika a bad hub or bent shaft. Try spinning the shaft and see if it is out of round. Do you have a fixed hub prop? Good luck.

I spin the prop and it looks perfect. Man I hope to get this fixed. The boat is awesome otherwise.

I don't know why they'd replace the u-joints on a new driveshaft assembly, but the u-joints are serviceable. Volvo will tell you they aren't serviceable because they don't sell the u-joints separately. However, many of us (myself included) have replaced just the u-joints. There is even a cross-reference chart stickied at the top.

Re: Help - Please

I took it back to them. They are going to take it out on the water and see if they can determine what the vibration is on turns. I hope it is nothing major.

Re: Help - Please

They took it out on lake. They said everything is perfect, no problems. They said that there is normal vibration with trim down at 3/4 to full throttle on straightaways, and they said there is normal vibration on turns.

I guess its all ok?

Anyone else have advice or input?
