Hey everyone. I need a little help on my boat. I have a 1998 sylvan PB162 aluminum with 40hp Force elec t/t. well i noticed a bass tracker with a 25 the other day at a local tourny jump right up on plane and scoot on good mine plowed a little and once i got on plane passed him but the boat doesnt like to JUMP on plane. my coangler came over the next day and handed me
a stingray hydrofoil said it would fix all my problems. well i hate to drill holes and wanted to research first. i looked at my prop it is a 17p and i Have a brand new prop that came with it and its a 19P. well right now it takes a little to get on plane but when it does it runs 28mph 4200rpm. the fellow i bought it from said the 19P would run about 30-32 mph but took longer to plane so i never put it on. well i looked for props online and could only find 8P-17P so is it safe to run the 19P? also should i look at gettin a prop with less
pitch for take off and less topend or just bolt the hydrofoil on? I was told to keep the high pitch and put on the hydrofoil to have take off and top end. but another friend said a foil is a bandaid and get a lower pitch prop and dont drill holes i would regret it. and sumtimes a bandaid is better than a major surgery lol. i have heard so much good about the foils i dont no what to do. Thanks so much for reading and any info! catchem all!

Re: help prop foil deliema

Bau, I have a 1995 Fore 40 HP on my 16' flats boat and I run a 14" Apollo SS prop with a set of Smart Tabs SX and it lets me turn right at 4,850 RPM with a 2:1 gear ratio and a top speed of 30 MPH with 2 people when it is not 98 degrees and 70% humidity outside. I use the Apollo, whih is a higher rake and upped prop so that I an raise my bow up when running in the Gulf and seas are running 2 to 3', and I have the smart tabs so I an ontrol the porpoising reated by this prop. I have a Blak Max 13" pith prop whih does not porpoise even without the smart tabs and it lets me reah right at 5,200 RPM at the same speed of 30 MPH with just 2 of us and my fishing gear and my live well full and ie hest with drinks. It is setup with 4 folding seats and extra batteries up front for the trolling motor and a enter onsole that I moved to the side and with a livewell in the stern and my starting battery. I have a builtin 10 gallon gas tank under the onsole and a 6 gallon tank under the bak dek. At times I run my boat with an allup weight of over 2,000 pounds and an still attain a top speed of 24.5 MPH.
Depending on your model year, gear ratio, and maximum reommended WOT RPM I would reommend a 14" pith Solas Amita 4 blade aluminum prop, it will jump on plane and arry a very heavy load with hardly any loss of top speed and wil linrease your aeleration through out your whole RPM range whereas the prop you are running now will not. By running your motor over propped as you have it now is very detrimental to the long term reliability of it. With this prop you should be able to attain maximum RPM of about 4,800 to 4,900 RPM and I promise you that you will be very happy with the differene in the ride as I am about to order one for my boat as well.

Re: help prop foil deliema

Well took it out and man im glad i didnt just throw a foil on it! it was runnin around 5200 rpm and 31 mph now with the 14P. and when i added my wife and two other friends i was still able to jump on plane and get around 23 mph! my dad said to go down to the 13 but that would rasie my rpm to over 5200 and from what ive found my motor a 1998 force 40 should run between 4750 - 5250 wot so im kinda thinkin i better stay with the 14. what do yall think?
