Hello I started this thread in hopes of attracting some helpful advice. Picked up a Laser 2 prop 20 pitch and just ran it for the first time with the vent holes open. Also had about 320 pounds of extra weight on board for today's test which is NOT consistent with my other prop test runs (me and one other person) so I will re-test again as also the weather was against us today.

Long story short, prop turned 5000 rpm and was slowly gaining some speed as it kept going, problem is the hole shot was the worst so far out of all the props I tried. The previous 3 props I tried were all aluminum, 17, 19 and 21 pitch. All ran great with good speed, but the 21 had terrible holeshot, though it did give me great top speed (48 MPH on GPS) at about 5500 rpm. The 19 and 17 both got me out of the hole really fast, but they over revved my motor to about 6000 rpm. I would rather be propped towards the 5600-5700 rpm range that way if I have an extra person on board like I did today then I could hopefully be maxed out at around 5400-5500 rpm. And if I have my normal load, I won't let the rpms go past 5500. Is this the right idea??

So this is the first stainless prop I am trying, but why such a bad holeshot? Is it because I had the vent holes unplugged?? I thought the vent holes will allow the prop to spin faster till it bites?? Could it be that I am spinning too much and not enough bite, kind of like doing a burnout in a car? It literally took about 10 seconds to just get out of the hole, and it felt like it would never get out, but it felt great when up on plane and had a really good feel in the water, great handling and speed, even low speed/docking was improved.

Overall I really do like the prop, but I am very disappointed with the holeshot. The top speed wasn't bad considering I had a lot more weight than usual, my gauge was reading 47 mph which is about 4 mph off (so more like 43 mph). I tried this prop in hopes of experimenting with the vent holes to see what kind of results I get. Should I try plugging them? They are the square type holes not the round ones and the motor is a '95 yam 115 V4 2 stroke on a 16.5 center console.

We hit some good chop in about 15 kph winds right against us and I was VERY impressed with how well this prop was holding the boat, in fact it handled so well that this was the only time I was able to run full throttle while going head on with some decent chop and man am I impressed! I will try it again this week as we are having a week of wonderful weather and I am 10 mins from the lake. Do I plug the vent holes and try again? Or do I take my prop to the shop and get them to work it a bit? Or should I just try the same prop in a 19 pitch instead?

Sorry for making this such a long post. Please help me out if you can, thank you and God bless!

Nick

With venting, more is not always better. Too much venting and the prop will lose thrust--that is, more than you want to lose. Like Goldilocks you need to start with plugs with the smallest holes and work up to the size that is just right.

OK, your 21 P aluminum prop had a bad holeshot. You tried a more aggressive-style 20P SS prop and it had a bad holeshot. The difference in RPM between 20P and 21P is only 200RPM. Add the extra aggressiveness of the Laser, and you loose that extra RPM.

You can experiment with the plugs/vents etc, however, I think you need to drop to an 18P on that laser.

Thanks for your replies. I found out I can only get the solid plugs for this prop as they don't make ones with holes, ontop of that here in Canada they want $18 a plug!!!! What a ripoff. So I will hotglue my own plugs tonight and might test it tomorrow to see how it goes. I am most likely gonna get rid of it as I need more rpm, but before I do I want I experiment with the vent holes plugged. I found a guy with a brand new laser 2 19" pitch, and it's got the plugs in it already. I may buy that off him as its a good price, and it should bring my rpm up just a bit.

I will experiment tomorrow with the plugs and less wight to see what kind of rpm I get. Also want to take a look at my anti vent plate and where its position is in relation to the water level while moving.

Any other advice is welcome!

Thanks,
Nick
