Does anyone out there know the correct order, or procedure on checking spark problems.
From what i understand the Trigger would be the first to test, then stator, coils and power pack?
Being that the current from the battery would first hit the trigger and go on down the line.
I am having trouble believing my local boat shop on there diagnoses of my spark problem.
Service manager says that my stator is bad, and possibly my power pack....after talking to the mechanic he just tested my trigger, and said that he gets no reading off three of the four leads, but a faint reading off one of the leads.
It looks true to fact after testing the trigger it is bad, but how can they say my stator is bad when there is no current going to it from the bad trigger?
Maybe i am confused about the testing order, but would it seem logical that if the trigger is bad, the stator would not work?
Perhaps there is a way of jumping around the trigger to test the stator? But the shop is not telling me they did that, just tested the trigger, and assumed the rest was bad down the line.
Then again they could replace the trigger, then just say everything else is bad....prices through the roof into outerspace....just looking for some guidance in this delema.....thanks....jas....

Re: Help....Question....

I have a 50 hp Force US marine cdi 1990.
Serial # is wore off, but i have 22530 on the title,
I have had problems ever since i changed the battery out. Engine turns over, but no spark.
I had it in the shop last week, have no readings from stator, still no readings with new trigger.
Suspect stator is bad, so going to order one today, along with a new power pack just to be sure. Checked everything all the way back, ignition, kill switch, harneses, have power all through untill it gets to stator.
I hope replacing these parts remedys this, after all i have been advised to do. Just about to give up.
Mechanic getting absolutley no readings off meter when testing stator. Hope this is the problem, it seems the previous owner of this motor had problems, power pack is blue, and wiring has been modified as automotive leads, not original marine leads. Looks fairly new, and i am getting power at all positive terminals on the side board.

Re: Help....Question....

Just so you know, the ignition system is completely separate in circuitry from the rest of the elcetrical systems. You won't find DC battery voltage anywhere in the ignition system. It's driven solely by the stator at much higher AC voltage. Even though the stator and ignition switches have wires and terminals for the entire electrical system, they are separate from each other inside those components.

Re: Help....Question....

So what would you recommend at this point? I have tried just about everything i can. I keep going back and check things over and over. It looks like this has happened to the previous owner, and i have been trying to contact him.
It just seems funny how a battery change can change the whole electrical system on a motor.
I confronted the mechanic on the stator operation that you stated before, and he agreed, but he said if one little unit in the stator is bad, it will not function, unable to complete the circuit on either the ignition, or charging process of the stator, Getting no readings at all told him that its no good.
Her we go again.......Thanks for you help....

Re: Help....Question....

Factory. Available thru a Mercury or MerCruiser dealer. That section is intentionally presented in such a way that anybody with a multimeter and a few common tools can easily follow it. It goes step by step, tells you which wire to connect to the balck wire and which wire to connect to the red wire, what to set the knob on the meter at, and a range of readings you should get. Nobody presents it better. Nobody even comes close. Good luck.

Re: Help....Question....

If you are going to do diagnostics on your ignition system you will need a DVA meter or DVA adaptor for your DVM. This unit reads peak voltage. If you do a yahoo search for DVA Adaptors you should be able to find one for thirty five bucks. Because pulse speeds are so slow on an outboard I dont think you can read these voltages on a standard DVM until you start approaching 3500 rpm. Even then the voltages are in RMS instead of peak so you will have to do a bit of math to figure that out.

WillyBwrite is correct that the factory manuals are the best, however if you want to learn how and why your motor does certian things the Seloc manual might be better for you. Your best bet would be to get both. I boats sells the syloc manual. Here is the link Seloc force manual

I have a friend thats going to help me change these items out, just wanted something to go by besides the one wire at a time hook up. As far as a meter, i wont have access to one, so i will hope that these part changes will do the trick.
Thanks for your help guys......jas....

Re: Help....Question....

Would it be a good idea to order a rectifier/ regulator, in addition to my stator and power pack? I hate to get everything on and it still not fire because of a small inexpensive part, i would rather have everything just in case?
So far have trigger, installed with no labor, i have stator , and power pack ordered...can you think of anything else?

ps...my administrator came in and zapped my computer here at work so i had to login under my old screen name....not only have i messed up my ignition sytem...i have been demoted back to cadet.
