Hi folks. I am trying to resurrect this one. Replaced all electrical parts but Mag plate is badly marred and does not rotate. Tried cleaning with carb cleaner and rubbing alcohol as well as (carefully) lightly sanding surfaces, which initially seemed to have helped but the more I tried to move it back and forth to free it up just caused it to seize up again. Afraid of over sanding it. Help!

Are screws on the new coils too long ?----Is the magplate assembled correctly "----Any pictures?----Did it rotate before your work ?----I think this should be an easy fix.----Stop sanding !

Aluminum on aluminum is a mistake.-----Something is amiss.----Most magneto plates have a brass insert that turns on the block.----I could look at a 1953 magplate sometime , with some incentive !

I get what you mean about aluminum on aluminum. Since I have zero experience with these motors, I have no idea if this is original or not. Do you have access to an early 50's Seahorse to inspect? ...Or know anyone with one?
Thanks for your reply!

It is supposed to have friction so it stays where you put it. That's what the wave washer is for. It also is to be greased lightly. The common problem is coil shoes dragging on flywheel magnets. Are they? Is that what you're sanding? Adjust them back.

Hey guys, the mag plates that use a wave washer don't have a brass insert, and have worked just fine for over 60 years. They probably will still be working another 60 years, but most of will have to look down from Heaven if we want to see them.

OK!

Based on the collective wisdom and input here I decided to try a bit of grease, which initially did not solve the problem. In the process though I figured out what was going on. This is the part where I embarrassedly exclaim D'oh! Turns out I was so focused on the top and center of the mag plate, I did not see that the lever on the carb was getting caught on the wrong side of the speed control lever and binding against the inside edge instead of being properly positioned against the outside edge. Now, it glides back and forth nice and easy!

Thanks y'all!
