Re: Help removing broken screw

first and formost...patience! get some pb blaster let it soak!!!! u can use a little heat from a propane blow torch, but dont overdo it, spread the flame out ....the right one looks like you can get on it with some pliers...the other one i would use a sharp chisel to put a slash across...and the u might be able to use a punch to get it spinning...patience, patience, PATIENCE....good luck....also there is a mixture of ATF and alchohol ive heard works well, instead of blaster..look it up

stevo is right on.
That other mixture for penetrant is 50/50/mix of ATF and acetone. Keep fire away from that stuff though.

If you cannot get them out, grind the stud surface flat, and center punch the stud. Purchace a left hand drill bit from a auto parts store and drill into the stud. Sometimes the drill bit will catch while drilling, and unscrew the stud.

I have a different opinion. Those bolts will not come out cleanly since that is oxidation between aluminum and whatever steel the bolt was. Even if they are removed I would never trust the threads again.

By looking at the picture there appears to be room for new holes for new bolts. That is the route I would take. I would do what I had to and reassemble with new bolts coated in grease so corrosion is not promoted.

I'm with Bob just grind em flat and drill new holes,Use bolts and nuts with lock washers. I'd even go as far as replacing all with nuts, bolts and lock washers.Just incase there is a next time.

Heard of a tap and die? You need the tap,it threads a properly sized hole.Bring a bolt into a hardware store and ask for that tap, while your getting the tap ask for the proper sized drill bit for that tap.

In the situation you're in, you may just want to take it to a good machine shop and let them have a look at it. They work with these probs every day and have all the proper tools.

Go to Sears, buy the proper matching tap and drill, looks like 1/4x28 will work.(measure the other screws)
You'll need a 6" drill extention while you're there.
Use oil on the tap and google how to do it properly or you'll break the tap.

Re: Help removing broken screw

I just successfully removed 3 broken screws like yours from my motor last week, using a propane torch and vise-grips. If you can get vise grips on the one, I'd heat the surrounding aluminum with a propane torch; you won't be able to get it hot enough to do damage with propane and the large mass of aluminum will dissipate the heat quickly. When aluminum oxidizes around steel it grips it tight, getting fluid to penetrate is almost impossible (I always try it but it never helps..still, it can't hurt), heat is your best option. Heat the aluminum as it will respond quicker than the steel to expand and release it's grip and allow you to turn out the broken stud. You can drill out and heli-coil the other, but you better know what you're doing. I would not suggest using easy-outs in this situation, it would probably end badly. I think that Bob_VT has offered a good option as well. Good luck.
