help removing steering cable

Helping a friend with his boat, engine mount stringers are bad, have outdrive bolts off ready too come off but haveing a problem with the steering cable the boat is a 76 adventure and the out drive is a omc, the cable wraps around a pulley and, the omc book I have shows everything being worked on, on a bench, doesnt help much when trying to fit these ape hands in between the motor and outdrive, any help would be appreciated

Breadman, you detach the whole cable and drum from the intermediate housing. You need to have the out drive off so you can pull the steering gear and shaft out of the intermediate housing.<br /><br />The drum is held on to the shaft by a single screw thru the outer edge of the drum on the transom side. Have someone turn you wheel until you see the notch appear in an accessable position. The screw is a slot head and goes all the way thru the shaft.<br /><br />Once you have the screw all the way out, you can pull the gear and shaft out. Pay attention to all bushings and washers on each side of the drum.<br /><br />Good luck, it's not that difficult.
