Help removing steering pin - SP-A or 290 outdrive

This is my new project boat. 1990 Glastron with Volvo Penta SP-A outdrive... I think! Haven't dealt much with Volvo Penta stuff.... I am in the process of removing the outdrive and have run into a couple of snags. (Which is always the case when you boat in salt water! :blue: )

I am at the point where I need to remove the steering pin as described here in the manual:

I was able to successfully remove the two allen bolts holding the pin in, but the pin itself is STUCK. Here's pic of the pin, and then with the bolts I am using as jackbolts.

I have tried heating the helmet and tapping it with a hammer. No joy. I am afraid to put much more pressure on the tow 1/4" bolts as I do not want to snap them off.

Any suggestions or tips? I have never removed one of these and do not know where it typically sticks. Is it in the helmet itself?

You're doing it the right way. It looks like you may run out of threads on your 1/4" jack bolts however. It could be sticking in the helmet, or to the upper gear box...I would turn the bolts in tight and tap, twist, swear at it until it gives.

Success! Heating it and taking a break and spraying it some more seemed to help. Now another question. The pin came up enough for the helmet to move up... but it doesn't seem to want to come all the way out. I can even move it back and forth by hand, but the last little bit will not come out. Seems like there may be a ridge or something. I guess I will try tapping it out from underneath once I get the upper off and the bellows out of the way.

yep it should come all the way out. Longer jack bolts.

Looks ok for a salt water boat. Looking forward to seeing the insides...
