First of all that's one of the easy ones to remove!! How or what makes you think your starter is bad???

disconnect the battery....
2 wire terminals on the solenoid, 1 large, 1 small...
2 bolts facing down,in the lower rear of the starter body.... 9/16s boxend wrench.....(if you can't get the wrench on the back 1, take the 4, 1/4" bolts out of the flywheel cover plate)
Might be a small bracket on the leading edge of the starter body... 7/16s wrench I believe....

Install in the reverse of removal...

Re: HELP!!!...Starter motor removal for Mercruiser 3.0 (1992)

Thanks for the swift replies... im impressed already with this board.

Bondo.... I have disconnected the wiring and read a similar description to yours on another website. The problem is... there only seems to be one large bolt under the rear back of the starter motor (as well as one at the front which is an L-brace) . I dont see anything else holding it on. Do I need to disconnect the solenoid from the top?

Thanks again for your help.... but im not outta this conundrum yet.

Cheers,
B.

Re: HELP!!!...Starter motor removal for Mercruiser 3.0 (1992)

... Still hoping for some further insight into removing the starter.. seems to be only one bolt on the underside which I have removed and its still firmly in place...

I tried to jump the solenoid on the starter to see if it would crank and nothing happened so im assuming that the motor needs to be rebuilt or replaced. I hit it with a hammer to try and loosen the brushes and when I turned the key I could hear it spin for a fraction of a second... will post a more detailed troubleshooting thread later.... thanks all

re-read bondo's post then start feeling around for that second bolt that you probably won't see till its out and in your hand.

Re: HELP!!!...Starter motor removal for Mercruiser 3.0 (1992)

OK... ive got the starter motor out after much cursing.

When I removed the starter I could see the big flywheel for teh engine (im assuming thats what its called).. anyhow... its the big-toothed thing that the starter presumably spins. Should I be able to freely turn this using my hand/finger? Because I can't and this worries me.

Now that ive got the starter removed and taken apart, my plan is to recondition it (i.e. clean, lube, and replace any worn parts). To my amateur eye it looks in good condition. Any recomendations as to how to tell what internal parts are worn and should be replaced???

No you can not turn the flywheel freely by hand.
Take the starter to a shop to be rebuilt. There is nothing you can do for it.

"Should I be able to freely turn this using my hand/finger?"

No... Takes alot of Torque...

"my plan is to recondition it"

Good Luck, Because,

"To my amateur eye it looks in good condition."

If I were You, I'd bite the Bullet,+ Go to my local NAPA store to buy a recon starter.....
Or Go to ebay, You might find a good starter there.... And Buy a Manual while you're there......
