I have a 1992 Johnson 120 Outboard motor on a skeeter fish and ski. Today I was at the lake I have had it out several times this year already, I was running it around the lake for about 2-3 hours fishing the lake and I cut off the motor to do some fishing. When I went to crank the motor all I could hear was a spinning noise. I took the motor cover off and watched it. The small wheel that engages with the fly wheel to crank the motor just kept spinning. For some reason its not popping up to engage the fly wheel? Anyone know what I need to do to repair it? I am mechanically inclined to work on the motor. Please any and all help is greatly appreciated Im on a tight budget!!

Looks like your bendix gear is shot. Try to free it up bny hand, but odds are its either old and worth out or broken, Are your battery leads hooked up corrrectly?

Re: Help!! Stranded on the lake today!!

Oil the shaft that the bendix rides up on with a light machine oil, like 3in1 oil.
Not WD-40, not motor oil....light machine oil.
Make sure it is clean also.
Clean and tighten all battery connections as mentioned above.

Do that first, before you shotgun the starter and bendix.
