Hello all, I am brand new to boating, but very interested in learing alot about this new hobby, I have recently purchased a 85 cimmaron with a force 85 motor on it. I came by it CHEAP and it needs some help. Motor has run last year but would not open up throttle. I am taking it to the shop but I am curious if I can test things myself. I do not live reletivly close to a body of water (bout 20 min) and I would like to tinker on it at home. Can you use a 55 gal barrel full of water to run and test? May sound like a stupid question but I dont know....how else do you test and diagnose problems with out goin to the lake? if so will it hurt it with over heating and what tests should I start with? I have read posts till my eyes are crossed but alot of info is too deep I need some basics on storage and I am curious about how difficult a marine motor is to work on at home. I have rebuilt a v8 car motor B4 but marine is new to me. Where do I start.

P.S. Thanks for the Great info so far. when I got into boating I knew to go to the internet for a forum and this is the place.

Chris

CD get yourself a manual on the Force (Cylmer makes a good one), the barrel will work for some of the basic test, the throttle not opening WOT may be worn out control cables(stretched out) mine on my 88 Bayliner w/125 Force where in 98 ;) Good Luck & Welcome to the wonderful world of Boating, Be Safe and Enjoy

The manuals stated are a great place to start.
As far as the throttle not opening up, my advice would be to have the carbs cleaned or clean them yourself. If it has been setting, I would bet one or both of your carbs are plugged. There is a small brass orfice in the bottom of each carb the easily plugs with age(setting idle) that probably need cleaned.

Force motors are one of the easiest, most self explanitory to work on. It is fairly easy to see how they come apart and go back together if you take the time.

My 2 cents

Thanks, I have no knowledge of marine engines but I can follow directions in a manual. The boat is at the mech right now and should get looked at on monday. I'm praying its on in need of a good carb cleaning. Does cleaning require a kit to replace? gaskets and such? or is it just a matter of cleaning and decarbonizing?

Blazer, there is a piece that you can connect to your lower unit, its shaped like a U and it has an opening for you to scwer your hose into then connect it to the water intake on the lower unit, if you go to a wal-mart u can pick on up for about 3 bucks you might wana try that
