Just got home from the lake, pulled in the driveway, went to lower my motor, and the tilt assist lever broke. It looks fine on the lever side, but the part of the lever that connects to the cable broke.

My motor is stuck down.

I cannot get my boat into the garage without tilting it up a bit.

Should I try and pull or push on the cable to release the hydraulics? Anything else i can do? I think the cylinder is fine, just the plastic lever broke.....

Re: HELP! tilt assist lever broke

Extensive googling and a part search on the johnson website determines that the part I need is 0334153.

It's a little linkage that Johnson uses all over the place....carb linkages and other places too.

I'll need to call a dealer to get the factory part.

7.35 each from my dealer. I'm ordering two becasue these things are all over the place in my motor. Should be here on Thursday.

Re: HELP! tilt assist lever broke

Got one today from a different dealer. Installed it and it's working now.

Still very tight and hard to lift, but it works.

I think I can get it easier by adjusting how far the shell is screwed on the cable, but it's a finicky process.

Any advice? How easy should the tilt assist be?

It should move up and down easily. Finicky is not the word, it is a pain in the arse. You are correct about adjusting by screwing the shell farther down on the cable. The problem I have is you have to keep taking the shell on and off the ball bearing thingy (technical term) to adjust it and I break two or three before I get it situated correctly. I have never found a good way to pop the shell on and off the ball bearing thingy. Let me know if you have a good way.

Good luck.
