Im very new to boating so excuse my ignorance on the matter. I have a pontoon boat with the following engine description:

5.7 Litre Turn Key Start Mercury Mercruiser
Serial: 1A081975
D.O.M.: 2007

I know its a 5.7 litre, but im trying to figure out if this is a GM motor or a Ford so I can for example buy oil filter for it.
It has an alpha one gen 2 stern drive if that makes a difference.

If I look at the following url: http://www.iboats.com/Mercruiser-Oil...view_id.269912
I have no idea which oil filter it is. Is the number next to them the original number for a mercury oil filter? or the boat engine information? Also, Im assuming my oil filter isnt using a remote filter. Its located facing the engine from in side the pontoon on the front left side on the lower end of the engine block.

Thanks for any assistants

Re: Help trying to get information about my engine

If it's a 5.7 it is GM based, but from what you describe it sounds Ford. can you use port and starboard as we know not which direction you are facing when using left or right. If the distributor is on the pulley end of the engine it is a ford and a 5.0 or 5.8. If the distributor is on the back of the engine it is a GM. Now from the DOM it has to be a GM engine.

Standing at the rear of the boat looking toward the bow imangine a line down the center (midship) everything on your left is PORT and everything on your right is STARBOARD. Easy to remember left and port have fewer letters then right and starboard. Same goes for the bow light colors red left, green right. From this point it doesn't matter where you stand or which direction you are looking port is port and starboard is starboard.

Can you double check that serial number . . . Ford has not make engines for Mercruiser in a long time that I am aware of . . .

I cannot match that serial number to the lookup chart . . . closet thing is starting with 1A09XXXX , but those look like full inboards, not i/o.

Distributor at the back of the engine or the front?
Front = Ford
Back = GM...

If the DOM is 2007, then it will be a GM... Merc haven't used Ford engines since 1976...

Re: Help trying to get information about my engine

I will check again the serial number was on air clean with the D.O.M etc. Where can i look on the engine for the serial number?

The original oil filter im was referring to (which is on the starboard) is i think a fuel filter. I just assumed it was an oil filter cause it looked like one. From what I have read, the oil filter is in the back of the port side

http://www.justanswer.com/boat/16ukj-2000-mercruiser-5-7-350-changing-oil.html

But i will verify today and the distributor is in the back. Wish mine had a filter kit that was easy to access.

Thanks all

Re: Help trying to get information about my engine

The engine serial number is usually on a small plate located right above the starter (Starboard side of engine)

That serial number is for a 5.7 Chevy engine. As noted, Ford hasn't been used by Mercruiser since the 70's. The oil filters OEM number is 35-866340Q03, the Sierra conversion is 18-7824.
