Help w/25 HP Merc. Lower Unit Removal

I have a 1980, Mercury, 25 HP, 2-stroke, tiller steer, OB motor. I'm wanting to change my water pump impeller and I'm having trouble removing the lower unit. I removed the four bolts holding it on but I can only pull it out for about 1 or 2 inches. I think the shift rod is holding it on.

Could I have already damaged the shift rod assembly by not disconnecting it before I slid the lower unit off for about 1 to 2 inches? (I ended up sliding it all back up together again, until I can figure out how to do it right) How do I go about disconnecting the shift rod? Or, am I doing it all wrong somehow? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Did you remove the tork tab above the prop to see if the motor has another bolt in there that could be holding it up?

No.

I did, however, find an online service manual and finally found out that I do indeed need to disconnect the shift shaft at the upper end, just below the carburetor. But it doesn't say exactly how to do it. Question now is, how do I go about disconnecting it? Do I remove the screw or does it somehow "pop" off? And, how in the world does one go about reconnecting it when they're done? It looks like it would be quite difficult getting it all lined back up and reconnecting it again, as there isn't much room to get to it.

Yes. remove the ss screw and the plastic part were the screw was removed. easy to do. Don't lose the ss washer on the shift rod, the disengauges the the locking clamp in forward.
