Hello all. I finally took my new/used ranger out tonight. I had a horrible time getting her going. She cranks and turns over. She will idle ok. The minute I start giving her gas she dies. This continued for about 30-45 mins. Finally got her going. Ran her for about 30 mins. She feels very jumpy. Give her gas and no response... 7-10 seconds later she jumps. We shut her down and tried to start her again and the same thing happened again. Very difficult to get her going. Before buying the boat I had a mechanic come and check everything. Compressions checked out. fluids looked good. She started up (w/ muffs) and ran well. So what gives??? I changed the spark plugs (as directed). I think it could be the fuel line, throttle or dirty carbs (sat atleast a year). Any of those fit the symptoms??? I think fuel line b/c "ball pump" never stays hard. Please give me ideas. I am very frustrated being that this a first bass boat for me.

I would definitely get a new ball, especially if its not holding the pressure, most johnsons need about 10lbs of pressure, but i would also clean the carbs as well since its been sitting

So what changed from the mechanic starting it to you starting it,
different fuel?

when I got my boat last yr ( 150 hp) I immediately changed all fuel lines, new bulb, new temporary tank for testing, fresh fuel , new plugs, new fuel filter, removed prop to clean and regrease shaft, changed lower unit oil,

and that was before trying to start it.
After test running with a mechanic he suggested a power pack and rebuild carbs, did both and it runs nice.

Used engines are usually an unknown quantity so I wanted to make sure everything was covered. It really pays to go through a new to you engine before getting on the water. Bring everything up to snuff.
Unless the previous owner was meticulous and had the reciepts to show it, I just assume it needs a good going over.
