hi everyone . I’m new here and about to take on a project. Was wondering if anyone can identify what type of boat this is. I was thinking it’s an older Carolina skifff but I could be wrong. Any ideas?

Looks like a whole lotta work. Is the cap around?

As said by others - Paperwork? It's halfway to a yard planter.

How much do you plan on spending? Have you done anything like before?

This incomplete boat will be a money pit.

Mmmm I don’t mind spending a few grand. But it’s def a project I’m going to take my time on. So I’ll be doing little by little. And no I’ve never worked on a boat before. This is my first time. But I think I’m up for the challenge. We’ll see. Still doing research right now on stringer work and fiberglass.

Not counting the cost of a motor and trolling motor and “extras” I might add on

If you are willing to spend a "few grand", why not haul this one to the front yard, go to HD for potting soil and posies. With the rest, buy a boat in better shape and you can go boating now.

I'm afraid your enthusiasm will wane after your nether regions begin to itch from fiberglass dust.

Just being brutally honest. It's possible she may float again, but it's gonna be a long, long time. Good luck.

I feel ya. I defiantly just stood there and stared at it for a good min think what have I done. But something about the challenge . I like it. Idk can’t explain the feeling. Thanks for the heads up. Might keep a post going of the build. If anyone is willing to follow it for a couple years haha

the problem is you will dump a few grand into a boat only worth a few hundred if it was in good shape. not to mention about $250 in just safety equipment to grind fiberglass (because if you breath in fiberglass particles it shortens your life considerably). not to mention that stuff gets everywhere, including your nether regions.

So let me get this straight? You have no cap for that hull and you are okay with dumping a few grand into it? It could cost a lot of money just to find a cap, the cap on these boats is part of the structure of the boat and adds rigid structure to the gunwale area of the boat, it completes the structure.

How are you going to overcome no cap, a new one to lay up would be thousands of dollars unless you are a very good glass man.

I have been playing and rebuilding boats for over 30 years now and I would not take that project on.

MT, these boats were made with no cap .
the inside casting decks and such is what gives the sides its strength .
They also had foam with glass that run down the gunnels that made a shelf of sorts to stiffen the sides of the hull .
I have sunk a good chunk of change into mine but I am building it out the way I want it laid out . Gunna be my creek boat that I plan on keeping a long time .
Other than the itch involved it’s been pretty fun .
I would never recommend sinking a bunch of money into a project like this if you were trying to make money off just selling it .
I know that’s impossible ....

Yeah I was going to say that as well I don’t believe this has a cap. As far as trying to make money off it, no I wasn’t looking to fix and sell. Just a fun project to make my own. I’m not worried about the work I have to put into it or the money. As long as I’m not spending 10k into it I’m happy LOL. And the sides being stuffed I have some ideas for that as well. And from what I’ve been feeling on it, it’s pretty tough so far. The ideas I have for it should add double the strength 😁
