I've researched and can't find a good answer. I can't get a/c duglas fir. Can I just use exterior grade pine?

I would use exterior grade douglas fir. Pine doesn't do well if it gets wet. If that fails then use marine grade ply.

any good lumber yard can get 1/2" exterior grade 5 ply solid core fir plywood. if they can't they need to get out of the business.

Have you looked into Tuff-Stuff. This is marine board that is made of ridgid structural polyurethane and is made to replace wood in boats.

Or Plascore? Both of these products must be laminated.

cabinet grade is interior glued, the way its made keeps it from wanting to warp, for use as cabinet doors etc. and a better grade finish surface. also called paint or stain grade.
