I would like to add two more speakers to my glastron but I cannot seem to find a good location to mount them. These are the options I have come up with:

1. 5.25" speakers mounted in the upper padded area between the bucket seat and rear bench.

2. 6.5" or 6"x9" in the padded area near the floor on both sides between the bucket seats and rear bench

3. 2- 6.5" tower speakers.

I think option 3 would be the easiest but I would like to add a bimini and don't want to sacrafice too much head room.

Thoughts, opinions, experiences? Photo for reference.

Re: Help - Where to mount the speakers

I'm dealing with this right now in my bayliner 195 and I think I've decided on plan B. Original plan was to mount a couple speakers in the passthrough to the bow, but now I'm thinking that putting the speakers in speaker wedges and mounting them to the shelves that are under each front console would be easier and better than cutting into the boat.

i have heard them in the pass through and it sounded pretty well, and you could still communicate with out having a speaker blairing in your ear. can you mount 6x9s under rear bench

Re: Help - Where to mount the speakers

I used to install high in car audio, and have done a few boats. If you have the ability(some do, some don't) from your picture it looks like to me I would make a panel that mounts in the space between the rearbench and the side panel that is covered in vinyl to match the tan color. Paint the speaker grills to match also. What you need to make sure of is that you enclose the back of the speaker so you get the best audio quality. Alot of people don't do this. If you can picture, as the speaker is moving in and out to create sound as the front of the speaker moves out the back is basicly moving in, canceling the sound wave of the front. If you took two speakers and mounted one in a box and one not in a box and switched from one to the other you would here a dramatic difference in the audio quality put out. A person can take a very cheap speaker and make it sound half way decent, and a good speaker and make it sound like crap just by the way it is mounted.
Also High frequencies are very directional mid range not so much and low frequencies not at all. That is why you want tweeters pointed straight at your face and Subs you can mount anywhere. If you are standing afew feet from a speaker and put your hand up between your ear and the speaker the High frequencies will disappear. Try it.
Hope this helps.
We also used to mount alot of speakers in door panels and perforate the door panels with a tool that make round holes about 1/8th inch diammeter and it looks really nice but that depends on your talent at doing such custom work.

I think i'm going to go with option 2 with 6"x9" speakers. Should give good sound even though they are at the floor.

I'm guessing you picked that location due to ease of mounting, which is fine, just keep in mind your feet will have the best sound. Like I mentioned previously, make sure you baffle (enclose the back of the speaker) it looks like to me, if you mount it there, the back will be exsposed. If you don't baffle them your audio quality will suffer greatly.

Yes, That location seems the easiest. I can remove the lower panel with just a couple screws. It will make cutting the hole nice and easy. Ordered 6x9 polk speaker today. I do plan to box the speakers. Thanks for the advice.

Re: Help - Where to mount the speakers

I think I may have went too big for the speakers. The 6x9 speakers are too deep. I think they will fit but the speaker magnet hit the side of the boat. Will this be ok? or do I need some room. I could probably build a spacer. Maybe I should just stick with 6.5" speakers.
