Hello, I am installing a new alternator on my 1993 OMC 5.0HO and wondering if someone could help me identify what wires go to what connections on the alternator. I failed to mark all of them when I removed the old alternator. I have included a photo of the alternator with each post lettered A,B,C,D,E,F. Also included a photo of my alternator wiring numbered 1,2,3,4,5. If there is a someone out there that could match them up for me I would really appreciate it.

Zonasun,

Your picture of the new alternator is not as clear as I would like to answer your question, so here is what I can tell you.

The Orange wire "O" (1) is your positive wire and it should go to the POS post on the Alternator.

The Black wire "B" (which I presume is 5 in your pic, can't tell the color, but presume 5 is black) is your ground wire and should attach to the NEG post or GND post or the symbol for Ground post. (upside down tree symbol)

The Purple with white stripe wire "PU/W" (2) should go to a post stamped AC.

The solid purple wire "PU" (3) goes to post S on the alternator (your pic shows S as white letter B)
The Red with Purple stripe "R/PU" (4) goes to post EXC on the alternator (your pic shows EXC as white letter C)

It would be best if you told us/me what the letters stamped on the alternator say. Hopefully one says AC, one says POS, and one says GND(or symbol for ground)

Maybe this will help you also. (See pics)

I'll try to take a picture of mine tonight, but due to location it may not be possible.
I have a 1992 5.0L, and the schematics of the alternator for a carburetor motor are the same. (my wires are the same as your picture)

Hope that helps some.

By the way, did the new alternator come with any paperwork? (to explain the stamps/letters embedded in the metal for each wire post on the back)

That wire that has 2 connectors on it goes to the excite and sense(C and B) on the new alternator.

Do yourself a huge favor and get an OEM manual. Do not use a Seloc or a Clymer. They both have a ton of incorrect info in them.

The one that used to go to the AC terminal may be a tough one if that alternator doesn't have that output already. It drives your carb choke heater. Happen to have a P terminal on there? If so, that is where it goes.

Thank you so much for the direction and information Offrddrver and bruceb58! I am planning on using your help and installing this weekend. Also appreciate your advice on the manuals. I bought a Clymer manual and it offered almost zero information on the alternator. I will figure out how to buy an OEM manual. I bought the new alternator from a good large marine shop where I live. It is a Sierra brand OEM replacement but it came with no documentation.

Thanks again. This was my first post to this forum and glad I found it.

One of the huge mistakes in the Seloc manual is how it shows you to fill your drive. Who knows how many drives have been ruined from the incorrect filling instructions in it.
