Hi this is my first post and I see there are a lot of knowlageable folks here. I just got a 1988 30hp johnson that sat for a few years. The motor was fogged and looks brand new. I changed the lower end fluid and water pump and fuel pump first thing. The plugs are brand new NGK's which I want to change back to champion but anyway I hooked up the muffs and with fresh gas 50:1 mix started it up. It ran good for about 5 min. I shut it down. Went to go start it again in about 1hr and it coughed and shook. Like it was running on one cilinder. I took out the plugs and they seemed fouled. I cleaned them up best I could and tryed again...same thing. I then thought the float might be stuck so I removed the carb took it apart cleaned it which it looked great and reinstalled it...same thing. I then looked at the choke selinoid and not sure where the red lever should be started changing it. After pulling of the line on top of the carb I quickly figured inline with the selinoid was the auto and 90 deg was the manual. I put it back in the auto and with the motor running not touching the key should this hose off the selinoid going to the top of the carb be misting into the carb while running and not puishing in the key? or is the selinoid bad? might this be my problem? I did a compression test on the motor and Have exactly 118 psig in each cilinder..Is this ok? It appears I have good blue spark on each plug. After cleaning the plugs and putting the choke in the right position It started to run great...So I took it out for a run. It rand great for a few passes in the river. I thought I had it licked so I tied it up to the dock. Went down the next day to go out and run her and It started great then shut right down like i shut off the key. Then started shaking and coughing again....Sorry this is so long but don't want to just start changing out parts fro no good reason. Thanks for any help you might have....Greg

Re: Help with 1988 30HP Johnson OB

Welcome to iboats!

There should be NOTHING coming out the primer hose (that's the hose going to the carb) while the engine is running. It may be that the plunger in the primer solenoid is sticking.

If you look on the top of the primer, there is four screws holding the top on. Remove these and the top will come off. Under the top you will see the plunger. Make sure the thin part of the plunger has not broken off. This is actually the valve of the primer.

While the head is off, have someone push the key in while you watch the plunger. It should move in and out freely.

Pull the little red lever out of the head and inspect it for cracks. If cracked, hop over to the J/Rude dealer and get a new one.

Parts for the primer are available through your local J/Rude dealer.
