Help with 2 HP Johnson

A buddy of mine gave me a 2 HP early 70's model Johnson. It was missing the parts to turn the flywheel and the shut off valve. I got the rewind spring parts and got that working and I found a shut off valve from an old dirt bike. Its a bit longer than what the original looks like in the parts guide but it works. I got the motor so it starts but its barely running, always on the verge of stalling even when the throttle is all the way up. It revs a little than drops down, than revs a little than drops down and on and on. I tried the rich/lean adjustments but that didnt do anything. I didnt see any adjustments on the carb like there is on other motors to crank up the idle.

As far as gas flow goes, does the shut off valve have to be higher than the inlet? Not sure if this has to be gravity fed or if there vaccuum to suck in the gas. Is there maybe some adjustment to the flywheel or anything I can do to get the rpm's up?

You said "I tried the rich/lean adjustments but that didnt do anything." this points to a dirty carb. Remove carb, clean with carb cleaner and follow with compressed air in all passages. Install a carb rebuilt kit. Look in the FAQ's for the carb needle settings by J. reeves.
The tank is gravity fed to the carb, no suction of fuel from the tank, hence, no fuel pump.

I did have the carb apart and cleaned out the passages. All the internal parts looked alright but the float looked kinda nasty. I tried cleaning some of the stuff off with sand paper didnt look any better. I bet the float is too heavy not allowing more fuel to flow. Would that be a correct assumption?

Is there a carb kit that includes the float?

Nope , wrong assumption..if the float sinks or drops, MORE fuel will be admitted into the carb bowl. An OEM carb kit should have a new float.

I am having a hard time finding a replacement float for the carb. I found the carb rebuild kits but they dont come with the float, Sierra 18-7043 and Mallory 9-37106. Will the Sierra float 18-7222 work? That one says its for a 18hp and up...

The carb float for that engine is available from any dealer who sells Evinrudes, or from:

http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=253f7599692083b890e58ad04a09dc26

Choose Johnson from the drop down list, then drill down to your engine. I expect that the float is the same for all the early 70s versions. It's about $8.50, and you can get the part number there to take to your dealer, or order one from that site.

BTW, it comes in the carburetor kit from the dealer.

I was able to get new float at local dealer. It just had to be ordered seperately. Bombadier web site has fuel shut off valves still. I put a translucent fuel line on my motor, it is safe for ethanol gas and you can see fuel flowing to carb. The high speed adjustment on my 2hp wants to be lean when I am crusing and more towards rich when I am idling. I love my little motor. It is a kicker for my canoe. Can go all day on a quart of fuel!
