Help with 63 Johnson 5.5 CD-20

I have a Johnson 5.5 CD-20 but I’m missing the whole recoil assembly. Hard to find the exact one on the web but I k ow a lot are compatible. Does anyone know exactly what years will work with this motor?

Your location ?----1964 is the last year that this starter was used.

Maybe not as many years as you think. Sure, the basic starter was used on lots of models but the housing had variations to accommodate different hoods.

might be a good idea to post a free request at aomci.org. You might end up with a donor motor, maybe one with a missing lower unit or a blown powerhead.

I’m from Des Moines IOWA. But I’m a younger guy new to this stuff. Redoing my first boat project right now and have had this motor for a while runs great just broke the recoil assembly and ended up losing the assembly in a move. I wanna order a new one but can’t seem to find the exact year an model but I’ve noticed a lot are the same but I do see some differences. So that’s the thing I don’t wanna order one if there’s the possibility it won’t fit. I’ve talked to a couple guys and they are saying evinrude fisherman’s will work but not exact on the years. I wish there was a site or manual that just listed parts that are compatible.

Wow you guys are good. I spent all day looking for one for my exact motor, even all over eBay and I couldn’t find one. Thanks guys. Definitely be using this community if I need some more help down the road
