Hey Guys!

I need a bit of help with the stock single lever control box that came with the '77 Mariner 85 hp motor I recently purchased. The linkages did not come attached to the control box when I bought it and Im having an issue connecting them. First off I think I have the two connected to the correct sides of the box. When I move the lever to the forward pos. the forward gear engages, then the throttle, and vise virsa for reverse. So that portion is correct. However when I lift the lever to disengage the drive shaft allowing the motor to rev. the shifter still engages the drivetrain.

Plus when I reassembled the box it wouldnt go together. I had to lift the lever that disengages the drivetrain to get the box to close. Could this be a part of the issue Im having??

I have included some pictures to help

throlleside.jpg

This is the side I connected the throttle to

throttleside.jpg

This is the side I connected the Shift linkage to. The large wheel in the center wouldnt accept the throttle side without me lifting the disegagement lever.

Please let me know if anyone can help

Thanks in advance

Bassn,

Good info, I will have to bookmark that for future reference! Unfortunatly its not detailed enough and doesnt include the cables and where they attach.

Has anyone ever taken one of these apart in the past? Id really hate to have to test this on the water.

Can you attache a link for your unit? Sometime you can tell from the part name.

Re: Help with '77 Mariner control box

I figured it out thanks to the part # suggestion:D But it still doesnt explain why the shift linkage lockout isnt disengaging the gear box.

Is there a certain way these boxes go back together? should the lever be in neutral/ forward/ reverse? I just dont know. It seems odd that Id have to lift the shift lockout to put the box together. It would seem that it would throw the position of it out of place...

Hopefully the attached pdf will help.

I would definitely invest in a repair manual.
Mine is a Seloc #1406 and includes your motor and controls. It has helped me a lot!!!!

I believe the shift cable attaches where item #21 (Pin) is on the diagram you posted.

Re: Help with '77 Mariner control box

Bassn,

Thanks a lot! That picture really helped! I also found out why the shift linkage was engaging too! The brass wheel on the throttle was hanging up on the face plate. Nothing a little lithum grease didnt solve. Everything is in working order now! I had figured I put it together right the first time but the whole shifter linkage engaging was really throwing me for a loop!

Thanks again!

One more thing... I have about an inch or so of play once the shifter engages before the thottle does also. Is this typical for this style shifter or is its a age/ wear issue?

I would like to update the box at some point but Id like to get her on the water this season before I start tearing things apart.

Glad I could help.
I do believe that there normally is a little play. Mine has always done the same thing. This is so the engine does not speed up to quickly before the engine is fully in gear.
