Hi! New to the group.

I recently picked up a 1988 14' Bomber Scout bass boat with an Evinrude 60HP. The boat was sitting in a field semi-covered for the past five years. Structurally it's in decent shape. All fiberglass. Just very, very dirty.

I'm in the process of stripping everything out of the boat. I want to sand it down, repaint and basically put all new parts on it.

My question is with the top and the hull. If you look at the pick of the close up of the bumper and the rivets, it's obvious that everything above the bumper is a shell that just sits on top of the hull. For example, all the old carpeting ran under the shell. So like they carpeted the floor first and then set the shell on top of it and either riveted and screwed it down.

I've drilled all the rivets out and will pull the engine next weekend. What I want to do if possible is lift the shell from the hull and refinish both separately and then reassemble. It would be a lot easier to do it that way.

What I don't know is if there's any kind of glue or something else holding the shell down on the hull. Basically is it impossible to remove? Any idea if it's just sitting on the hull or if there's something holding it down other than the screws and rivets that I can see? I'm just not familiar with how boats like this are constructed.

Thanks for your help!

there usually is silicone between the cap and the hull

before you get ready to glue the carpet down, do a few test drills. your fiberglass boat is half wood and foam covered in fiberglass. my guess is your wood transom and the stringers are rotten (as with 99% of all fiberglass boats from 1988)

Thanks!

There is silicon under the bumper which would seal the edge of the shell to the hull. It's unclear if there's any further under the shell. I'll look closely.

Yes there are a couple of wood components. None that I see look rotten but I'll definitely check the transom more closely when I pull the engine. On the surface it looks OK.

You can't see it since it's got a layer of fiberglass. However the build quality in the 80 sucked and the wood rotted
..... most likely why the boat sat

Suggest going thru the stickies at the top of the forums, 4th down is the DIY links. Go thru links 14, 15, 18, 2, 3, 4a and 4b in their entirety

Got it! Thanks!

FWIW, I bought it from the original owner whose son is a friend of mine. It ran fine five years ago. So I do know some of the history of the boat. Still everything could be rotted as your described

Haven't found a fiberglass boat from the 80s or 90s yet that didn't have rot
