Hi guys,
I have only had my Bayliner for a month, so I am still learning about her. Could anyone please explain how I change the anodes on the Alpha one drive? I have found an anode kit on line, and when I brought the boat, it was suggested to me that I change them soon. But I have only a vague idea of how to, (from YouTube vids), and I don't know if I have found the correct kit . I understand that this is an easy task, (compared to my engine troubles)! but better safe than sorry. My boat is salt water only. My stern drive serial number is 0L406281, my transom number is 0L287387. Also, how do I tell the difference between an Gen 1 and a Gen 2?

Thanks for your time.

All the best.

Mike.

Re: Help with changing Anodes on Alpha one.

Hello Mike,

Quite a few anodes on the Alpha One Gen II drives (that's what you have).

One on the end of each trim ram. Use a 5/16" socket to remove the screws holding them on (2 screws on each anode).
One anodic plate under the end of the drive anti cavitation plate. Some drive use a hex head bolt, some use a hex key bolt (Allen head), through the hole under the rubber cap above the plate.
One aondic plate at the front of the anti-cav plate. 7/16" socket from underneath for the 2 screws.
One anode block directly under the bottom of the gimbal housing (where the trim ram hoses come out). 2 screws underneath, again 7/16" socket.
Last one, you need to remove the propeller. It's around the end of the bearing carrier, and 2 screws, I think, 5/16" socket again...

I think I got them all. I'll go and take some photos of a Gen II drive I have here if you need more help...

Chris......

Sorry Mike, I missed answering a question you asked. Here's the main differences. Ignore the serial numbers as an absolute. We've just been through a thread where the guy has a drive in the Gen II range, and it's clearly an Alpha One. Btw, no official drive was called a 'gen I'. It's something people have made up (like 'pre-alpha'. God I HATE that term!!!) when the Gen II arrived. I think it's just so they can make absolutely sure people know they are talking about an Alpha One, not an Alpha One Gen II.... ;)

Thats great Chris, I can see straight away that I have the newer one as I have the slant at the back. Where are the trim sensors on the unit? My trim gauge on the dash says my trim is up, even though she is in the water with the trim fully down. Would like to jump into the marina and try to clean them up to get the gauge right.

Thanks again my friend.

Mike.

Hi Chris, did you ever find any pictures with the anodes positions on? Im dipping into the marina tomorrow with a wet suit on to hopefully change what I can just to see me through this season. I used the trailer tilt function yesterday, and could see the remains of one anode only. Ekk.

Re: Help with changing Anodes on Alpha one.

Anodes for a Gen II... (6 in total).

One inside the bearing carrier (around the prop shaft) (held in with 2 small screws, use a 5/16" socket)
One on the end of each trim ram. (use a 5/16" socket, 2 screws for each anode)
One above the propeller in the back of the anti-cav plate (except for 3.0L engines, it's a fin, not an anode) (access through the hole above the plate, uses a 1/2" socket???)
One on the top of the anti-cav plate at the front of the drive. (2 screws from underneath, use a 7/16" socket)
One under the gimbal housing, where the trim hoses come out of their little manifold... (also 2 screws, 7/16" socket, I think)

HTH,

Chris.........
(Bit chilly to be dipping in the water isn't it?)

5mm , that's my SUMMER suit!!! I'd be looking for a 7mm or a dry-bag...

Good luck...

Re: Help with changing Anodes on Alpha one.

Only managed to do the ones on the rams. Just held in to tight, I was lifting myself out of the sea whilst trying to get them off. Will have to wait until season end in October so that I can do them on dry land. I shouldn't think the drive will rot away in a few months....

We have a 1992 20' Celebrity Cuddy Cabin and, when a marine mechanic was putting on new magnesium anodes, for freshwater, he told me that there was no anode behind the prop and not even holes to install one. The Kit we got was for 1991 and Newer Alpha 1 Gen II. I checked an invoice, where we had some transom assy. work done, and it stated that we have an Alpha 1 Gen II drive.

Are there props on boats that don't use an anode?

This topic is over 5yrs old, please dont post to old inactive topics.

Asking about your boat/prop problems/questions in someone elses topic is considered a hijack and should also be avoided..
