I have a 198? merc. 470 190 HP that needs a starter. The one that came out did not have a solenoid on it, yet many other starters that are listed as a direct replacement have a solenoid mounted to the starter. So what to do about the wiring? Use both solenoids? Bypass one? Any help would be appreciated.

The starter you are looking for was a later model Mercruiser replacement Delco GM kit . The kit came with 2 stepped studs that were 1/2" 13 on one end and 7/16 on the other with matching lock nuts. A jumper wire that connected the boost solenoid to the slave solenoid . A rebuilder told me that basically the starter is the same as an 60s International Harvester truck. The Prestolite starter was also prone to having problems "dragging" and with the drive not staying engaged and doing what is known as a "false start" where the drive un locks itself. You should be able to locate a replacement Delco style and kit from Mercruiser.
