I have a Chrysler 10hp Sailor ('76-'77 model 100HA). The manual says the compression should be 115, plus or minus 10. (refers to "Compression -- Average Lbs."). I'm getting 150 P.S.I. in each cylinder. I must be doing something wrong.

I just bought the tester. It's the kind you hold in the plug hole while cranking the engine. (I looked for the screw-in type, but this was the only one they had. I figured I could use it on this outboard since it's electric start with the starter button on the cowling.)

Can somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong here. I'm baffled.

Curt in Maryland (oldboat1)

Howdy Oldboat.

You aren't doing anything wrong. The manual expects one type of guage and procedure. Your guage seems to read differently.

You got the same reading on both. The critical part of the test is to look for differences between the cylinders. Your engine is tip-top.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: Help with compression test

Thanks, J.B. That's good news. I really want to use this old sucker, and when I get much beyond tweaking ignitions and such, I'm out of my depth. I've got a carb problem, I think, but the compression test threw me -- will get back to the carburetor, and see if I can find the problem there.

Curt
