All this talk of winterizing and shop rates, I'm re-considering having the shop do my out drive maintenance!
I'm trying to determine if I should have the shop do it, or myself.

I'm going to call the local shop tomorrow and see what they charge, so in the meantime I'd like to see how much the DIY'er can do it for.

Ok, on to my main question:

I need to know EXACTLY what parts I will need before I tear into my drive.

I want to replace the water pump/impeller and related seals and gaskets. It's time, as the boat is a 2001 and it has never been taken apart.
it's spent 99% of it's life in fresh water.

Ok, so here's my info:

Purchased 2001

Mercruiser 305 (2bbL)
Engine # 0M001347
Drive # 0L884418

Some web sites list different parts for the same model which for the first timer...is confusing!

I just need to know what to get.
I'd love to learn to do this kind of work myself... even if my back can't handle it...Cause I know my wallet won't at the local screwlearhip!

Thanks for all the help,

H.

Your best bet is to get the Mercrusier manual for your boat. It will tell you almost eerything your need to know

Yes, I'm off to do that this afternoon. I have a manual for my older boat, but not my newer one.

I thought there might be a Mercruiser guru that might know what I needed.

Thanks,

H.

Re: Help with finding right parts for Alpha drive

First of all, you have the wrong drive number there. 0L884418 is for the transom shield. Your drive number (If it's still the original drive) is 0L791995. It's also a 1.47:1 gear ratio.

You will need at least items 30, 27, 25, 24, 23, and last but not least number 7 from the drawing below. Leave number 7 out and it will cost you a drive. Go to dougrussell.com and click on Alpha I (Gen II)1998.
Before you do anything get the service manual. It's also online..... Click here for the manual.

And be very carefull you don't break the 4 bolts (Item 26) that hold the water pump on. That would ruin your whole day.

That number was put in my Mercruiser book when I bought the boat. The dealer peeled it off the paperwork and stuck it on the owners manual. I just assumed it was the serial number etc...

Everything is OEM. Nothing has been changed.

I guess I'll go look for the right numbers!

Thanks,

H.

Don't forget a fresh #6 washer in the above diagram.
