Hello,

I just installed a fuel water separator on a 1984 2.5 l omc stern drive engine and I can not get it to fire up. I filled the canister with fuel. I'm questioning if I have it installed wrong. I have the hose from the gas tank going to the input of the separator then the output of the separator to the input of the external fuel pump on the side of the engine. Then the original metal line from the output of the fuel pump to the carb. My question is because I have that external fuel pump should the separator be installed between the output of the fuel pump and the carb?

Thanks

Good Morning Rinker,

When I first got my boat I had to bypass the separator to get things running. After bypassing the separator I reconnected the lines and then the system ran fine. I suspect I corrected a poor connection somewhere.

Do you have the ability to bypass the separator to verify that the other components are working fine? (pump). .. assuming you've got nice fresh clean good gas.

I recently replaced the no brand, no marking, over tightened separator with the correct part, correctly fitting separator :)

Your line is up correct: Tank --> Separator/Filter --> Pump --> Carb

Did you check for an inline filter between the pump and carb ?

I suspect if you can't get things fired up, the pump is having a hard time getting fuel through the separator, check for proper venting as well.

Hi Rinker.

The fuel pump may have lost prime. Try putting a small splash of gas in the carb to get her firing. It may take a couple of times until the pump fills the fuel line. Put the flame arrestor back on before cranking.

Nope,.... It belongs Before the fuel pump, to save pumpin' the crud through the pump,.....

It's on the vacuum side, so a leak won't spill fuel, but allow air into the lines, filter, 'n pump,......

Possibly, the pump is already fulla crud, 'n ain't pumpin' fuel so well,....

I installed a water fuel separator on my engine and before going into the carbs, I installed a primer squeeze bulb. Before starting engine, I squeeze the bulb - until its hard. Thus, ensuring it has good prime. Perhaps your fuel system needs a squeeze bulb as well?

I got it to fire up today. I disconnected one of the lines and filled it with gas. I have 4 feet from the tank to the separator and then 3 feet to the pump. I also noticed the gasket on the fuel pump not seated properly . Maybe it was sucking air too.
