So I bought a new house and I have some unwanted grass or weeds in my lawn. Any help on how I can get rid of these 2 types of unwanted grass and what it's technical term is?

It looks like crabgrass and some other ugly weed.

Just be thankful it is green. Everything here burned up a month ago.

Kinda hard to tell from your pics, but i believe the 3nd pic is ground ivy, broad leaf spray should take care of that and probably the stuff in pic 4....Grass, like in pic 1 and2 are a bit tougher, as the are grass, just different kinds, undesirable. What kills that also often kills your bluegrass. Pic 1 may be new crabgrass, maybee quackgrass, you need to treat that in the spring BEFORE it comes up [ pre - emergent]=if thats what it is.. That REALLY hard to wipe out after it comes up... but it does die every year, but drops seeds for next year. Your best off starting in with a good lawn care program and the bluegrass should prevail and crowd out the BS. [It wont happen over nite though, its a process-lawn management]

Go to Menards or someplace that sells weed killer. They make killer that you can attach to your garden hose and spray over the infected area. Wont kill the good grass. Just read the labels. I'm with JB, as long as it's green it can stay in my lawn. Not sure I'd have much left if I killed all the weeds! As PTJ said, you usually apply weed killer in the spring... Hi Pauly....

In pic 4 if you are talking about the clover looking stuff,Oxalis, the flowers
in the spring are white, slightly blushed with pink. If it's one of
the pernicious weeds the flowers will be smaller and yellow and the
leaves are a bit smaller.
But I have never seen it grow upside down like that:D

You can also spot apply braodleaf killer in the fall. The grass strenghtens it's roots in the fall and the weeds do the same thing so fall is a good time to work on getting rid of them. If you're planning on any reseeding, apply the pre-emergnt very early in the spring and wait at least 6 weeks before spot or overseeding..

As Bubba said a selective herbiside application about every 2 weeks will eventually kill all the broad leaf and clovers infesting your lawn but as said earlier it doesn't happen that quick and will take at least a month or two. The Ortho product Bubba suggested really does work and maintenance program of it's application is required I use it in a pump up sprayer and coat the entire lawn in the evening when it's coolthat way the dew holds it in and lets it do it's job but it takes time. Also apply some aggricultural lime in the early spring to juice up the new growth of grass and a good fertilizer at the same time preferably after a good thatching.

Pic 3 is a form of "Creeping Charlie".

A devil to kill, has a small blue/violet flower about 2 months into the growing season.

Ayuh,.... In My world, Lawn means something quite Different than you guys are talkin' 'bout....

In May, If I can get the lawnmower over it, 'n grind it up, 'n things look generally, Green,...
That's a Lawn....

Now in July/ August, is my favorite time of the year fer Lawns,...
All brown, maybe faint hints of green, after a rain.. 'n the danm Chicory...
I mow in 2 or 3 weeks, instead of 2 or 3 Times a week, like May...

In Sept/ Oct it'll green back up, 'n I'll overseed with Contractor's Mix, laced with White Clover...
I get a nice thick green mat, 'bout 4/ 5" high til well into November...

After that, it's covered with Snow til April next..... :D

Can't spray here anymore so the weeds get trimed by the lawnmower.....overseeding is the only option I have ....anyways the weeds trimed it all looks green from afar

Re: Help with grass and lawn

I would agree with Roscoe - photo 3 is Creeping Charlie. I use Weed-B-Gon that is labeled to kill Creeping Charlie. It usually takes several applications over a few weeks. I try to spray it once per week for a few weeks...eventually, it will die out. If you do not attempt to kill it...eventually, it will just keep spreading.

Photo's one and two look like crab grass...too late in the season to really get rid of that...put down a good "pre-emergence" crab grass killer in the spring should eliminate most of this next year...but you have to put it down before the crab grass starts growing...

I haven't picked-up on whether you have kids, but I believe you've got pets. All of the suggestions will kill the pets as fast as the weeds. What I found works best on the creeping charlie is a solution of 5 tablespoons murphy's oil soap 4 tablespoons 20 muleteam borax in a gallon of hot water. I put it in my pump sprayer and let "charlie" have it. In about two weeks you should see it starting to die off.

Ahh thanks for the advice guys. I kind of figured it was too late for the creeping charlie you speak of. I do have a dog and he has been known to chew on some grass. I really appreciate the advice and my plan is to get this yard in better shape than it is this year next year and I will be happy.

I know some of my neighbors have some pretty good looking lawns but I tend to forget a lot of those that do are retired with time, and I am up-and-coming without time hehe. A man has to make a little time for manicures...even if it's for the lawn!

Re: Help with grass and lawn

I'd just keep it mowed till fall time.

Put down some winter type grass seed. Then in spring do a good thatching, Seed the lawn then buy some "Weed and Feed" fertilizer for spring time. Put on a little heavier then the bag says. But not to heavy or you'll burn the grass. Then water like you never have before. Trick is to get the grass growing faster and more abundant then the weeds. Once this happens, then the weeds will be choked..
Now this will get rid of most of your weeds but not all weeds. For this it's either pull by hand/tool or chemically for that species of weed.
