Help with J25 problem.

I am having a problem with my J25TECNB.

When the motor is cold and under load the motor seems to "shift" into neutral. It doesn't really shift, but just freewheels when the load gets too heavy. You back off the throttle, idle down and roll back in it and it works fine.... for a while.

The former owner said that it needed some washers replaced in the LU or something like that.

Any clue what the problem is? It occurs less often once the motor is warm. (A problem since I use the boat to duck hunt!)

Thanks,
Shane

Re: Help with J25 problem.

When a motor "shifts" into neutral, 99% of the time the clutch dog and perhaps forward gear are worn. Usual cause is poor (too slow) shifting. Unless someone has messed with the shift linkage or control box, it's undoubtedly going to need gearcase work.

This isn't "some washers"!

May be a spun prop . Might check it out before you go further.

Thanks, I will check out the prop first.

I hunted out of this boat all year last year and it has always done this. It is a pain, but doesn't keep the boat from running well.

It seems to be worse when you are running through lily pads and grass (which we do a lot of) Maybe this is due to the pads getting tangled around the prop?

P.S. The former owner is my hunting partner, I just kinda took over the boat and am trying to get some of the stuff patched up!

Thanks,
Shane

Re: Help with J25 problem.

Also, Let me restate what happens. The motor doesn't actually shift into neutral. Meaning that I don't have to shift the motor back into forward, but I do have to back off the throttle until it starts pulling again. It doesn't feel like it pops back into gear, but gradually starts pulling again.

Thanks in advance,
Shnae
