i am trying to determine the year of my Johnson outboard. Everything after AJ140 on the model no.has disappeared. I have been "told" it's 1989 vintage. She's a V140 with vro and 15" leg, tilt trim and electric start, so the next few bits would be AJ140T Serial number is A07605630. Can anyone suggest a course of action, thanks Martin

From what I can tell that motor was built between ' 91 and ' 94.

by the way have you looked at the round welsh plug on the top rear of the motor for a model number? about the size of a quarter.

Looking at boobie's link only 1990 and earlier match the tilt trim design with the twin trim cylinders

That motor was built in Australia (the "A" in the numbers). That could account for some of the confusion. Just tossing this in for whatever it's worth.

actually I THINK the tilt and trim change started in 1992 along with some gearcase changes but I could be wrong about that. that is why I said 1991. If I am wrong then it could be a 1990 or 1989. I do not think it is a 92 or newer. but powerheads do get swapped around. a dealer should be able to run those serial numbers. but since the numbers match this is the same powerhead and mid.

Absolutely F_R. Makes sense Sparkie and maybe i should have spelt out i'm in Australia and this engine has the A as a prefix for the model and serial no. and states OMC Australia but were they actually manufactured here or perhaps assembled? Anyhow i'll call a dealer during the week. Thanks all for the input

Just to close, no one is able to identify this engine in Oz via serial number. Experienced mechanic places it 1988 / 1989 20" leg.
