Any assistance here will be appreciated.

We are trying to replace the waterpump in a 1977 Evinrude 85 hp outboard. We have removed the bolts/screws at the bottom and the unit has dropped about an inch. However, we can't figure out how to get it off the rest of the way. Help!

Re: Help with lower unit - '77 Evinrude 85 hp

It sounds like you haven't disconnected the shift linkage. The connection of the shift rod to the linkage is underneath the carbs. If your motor is like my '76 85hp(I think it should be), there should be large hex screw with a 5/8 head (I believe) that a shift linkage arm going under the carbs pivots on. Loosen this screw off and you will be able to spread apart the two arms that pivot on the screw. When you spread apart the arms you should be able to slide the pin that is attached to one of the arms out of the shift rod. I think your lower unit should drop now.
