I am trying to take the lower unit off of my 1957 25 HP Sea King, I have gotten all the screws out but one which was a lot of work. The final screw will not budge. I cannot get leverage using a screwdriver the typical way so for all the rest I had to use the screwdriver horizontally and they all worked due to more leverage. But this one will not budge and I am afraid I am scratching to much off the screw head off soon if I continiue using the same horizontal screwdriver method. It just wants to slip off. Right now I have it sitting with WD40 sprayed on it. Waiting for some insight... Any special tool to help?

Re: Help with lower unit

it sounds like you are opening the lower unit, not take it of the motor. should be 6 hex bolts, and you have to disconnect the shift linkage, behind a 1"x2" plate on the side of the leg. if you are trying to open to get to the gears, i use a propane torch, and heat the area pretty hot, and the screws usually will come loose.

Re: Help with lower unit

Thanks for the fast response, I am trying to fully remove the lower unit to replace the impeller. I already disconnected the shift rod and I need to take out the screws holding the top of the lower unit, there are six of them and one larger hex bolt t the very back. The rest are not hex bolts. They are regular slotted screws. I have DW40 on right now and I am about to go try again. If it doe not work I will try the heat. Thanks

OK I used a vice grip to get it out and it worked. I am opening the water pump as we speak. Thanks for everyone on this forum's help.
