Guys,
I've disconnected the fuel line from the filter to the bottom carb and the fuel pump will pump no fuel when starting it. So I disassembled the fuel pump and can't figure out what the problem could be.
It has a diaphragm gasket between the pump and block. On the pump side of the diaphragm, there is nothing but 2 check valves which were both mounted in the same direction. Is that right??? I see no other parts in the pump.
Is the pump missing something?
Can someone help or give me a site that will have a blown up view of the pump and its pieces?
I'm at a standstill.....can't figure out why it won't pump!
Thanks,

Re: Help with merc 65hp fuel pump, please

I would suggest getting the shop manual for your motor. It would provide a detailed parts diagram and step-by-step description of assembly. However, if you provide the model year and serial number of your motor I can perhaps email or fax to you the section dealing with the fuel pump. I have a collection of manuals but I would need the serial number to determine if I have the one that matches your motor.

The below site contains parts diagrams for most Mercury outboards:

Re: Help with merc 65hp fuel pump, please

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!
The previous owner or his mechanic had:
1. put both check valves pointing the same direction
2. switched positions of the fuel line out of the pump and the plug that goes ont he same side of the pump as the fuel line.
3. The short fuel line section going from the pump to the fuel filter had an elbow in it that kinked it if you put the fuel line in the top hole. I had to take the filter loose from the block when I put the line in the correct hole on the pump so it would fit.
Anyway, it now runs good and doesn't die. I also adjusted the idle screws and smoothed out the idle now.
I'm going to order a water jacket cap gasket as it appears to be leaking a little around the spark plugs and order the correct fuel line section and probably clean the carbs. The man said he replaced the impeller and I am sure this is true as it pumps well and the water out the telltale is very cold as is the powerhead. I still may check it out.
thanks for the help HKeiner! I'm going to check out that website for sure.
I appreciate the help,
