Hi all this is my 1st (of many I hope) post.
I have a Chrysler model number 307 HOC outboard motor, serial number 1241 (I think as is hard to read).
The plate states HP CV30 & 21-2.

The engine starts on the first turn of the key however blue colored smoke was visible when tested in an outside water tank, is this normal?
There is a good amount of water being pumped from the exhaust which was only Luke warm after around 6-8 minuets on tick over.
I am unsure of the oil to petrol ratio, could you advise please?
Regards Anth.

Re: Help with my Chrysler CV30 outboard

50 :1 is the correct ratio using TWC3 oil ..its a 1980 model ....maybe you got a bit too much oil in the mix but in sunlight it may show up ....I have one the same and recomend you fit a tell tale to the pug in the top of the block near the thermostat as loosing your water is fatal.. I also found bad bad corrosion in the exhaust chamber cover as there is a compartment which holds water ...Filled it solid with epoxy compound.

"Wow" that is a quick concise reply.
The 2 spark plugs where a bit wet/oily after the initial test to be honest.
Should the visible pumped water increase/get a little hotter as the engine revs faster?
I hope to have a good test run in the next weekend or two to see how the engine moves our 16.5ft boat.
Cheers Anth.

Re: Help with my Chrysler CV30 outboard

Well we took our boat out today with our Chrysler CV30 outboard fueled up & the engine proved to be very adequate indeed.
I ask if anyone can supply an electrical charging diagram, as our engine failed to put any charge back into the battery.
We had to use the pull start which although was very reliable is not the option we prefer to use.
The starter engaged but there was not enough power to turn over/fire up the engine.
Anyone able to help please?
Cheers Anth.

Re: Help with my Chrysler CV30 outboard

Well you keep saying CV30 which is in fact a Yamaha...so what is the code/serial no it usually starts 30 ..... on a plate opposite side to tiller under the hood...There is no charging system fitted ..a good battery should last you many many starts. no good using an old crap battery and if you want to run accessories get a seperate battery ...I have a 35 HP which does have a charging system which will be for sale soon ...

SDC10568.jpgThe information I can read from the plate is "model number 307 HOC outboard motor, serial number 1241 (I think as is hard to read).
The plate states HP CV30 & 21-2".

There are wires (green, red, blue, yellow & black which I beleive attatch to the magneto?

Re: Help with my Chrysler 30 HP outboard

The CV is only the french for HP Chervaux Vapour ( isnt it nice to educate the yanks) Your model must have been on sale in europe /france. The magneto is self contained and the only wires comming out will be two ( on mine brown) which when earthed stop the engine. I have not seen in the manual any 30 hp with a charging system as with the magneto there is not enough room under the flywheel to fit the neccessary coils ..are these wires just terminated at the terminal block ? Photo usefull.

just found 1980 on charging system 36w max !!!! It is possible yours has been fitted with a later system ..I wll see if I can find a diagram ....watch this space

Re: Help with my Chrysler 30 HP outboard

slightly wrong there after 1979 they were fitted with CDI ignition and a charaging system and I see yours is 1980..you should have a switch box often called power pack and a rectifier like below .... your battery will already be earthed ie bat neg to motor case so the positive on the regulator ( LH image) goes to the battery positive ..thats the terminal that is at right angles to the others....The positive can be on the solenoid where the battery cable comes in. if it dont look like this you could have an older design ...replacements are cheap ..maplin or 'RS components rated 10 A or more is fine ( wish I had one on mine !!!

Re: Help with my Chrysler 30 HP outboard

I got your e mail and photos ....yours is certainly a CDI ignition and its has a charging system ...the small 4 terminal "box" above the plug is the rectifier ( modern version with push on terminals is left in phots post above ) The AC inputs from the flywheel coils are the blue.greens black is earth and Red the 12v output ...To test ..with the battery connected abd engine stopped you should have 12v between the red and black wire .. The red wire goes to the battery positive via an overload cut out which seems to be mounted over the carburetter...it looks like it has a red sticker on it ..it could have a reset button or be faulty.
Looking at the wires and terminals it looks like the outboard has been re wired at some time not too prefessionallly . In any event it will not work unless you can get 12v at the rectifier + terminal as without that its not connected to the battery.

I would also be interested to know what plugs are in it ..

Re: Help with my Chrysler 30 HP outboard

Thank you again for your very helpful reply, we have found a black earth wire (connected to fresh air) which we have now earthed.
The spark plugs fitted are "BOSCH SUPER 645".
We will test again next week & post an update as to the charging situation.
Regards Anth.
