Hi Everyone,

I bought my first boat a few weeks ago, and I bought a 20 hp Evinrude motor for it shortly after. I think I caused some damage to the lower end, and I'm trying to figure where to start when it comes to taking the gearcase apart, etc. Anyways...The guy I bought it off of claims it is about a '75. I'm wondering if anyone can help me decode the serial number: 207B62S693570. Thanks for all your help!

207B62 / 207B63 20 = 1977

I looked it up on the Evinrude site. Whats weird is if you look up the schematics, a 20HP is not shown?

So did I find a typo or what?

Re: Help with my Evinrude

Great, thanks a lot! So here's what happened.....The motor hadn't ran in a while, and it was idling pretty rough and choking out. At higher revs, it was running perfectly smooth. Since I had to be at a bit of a higher power setting to keep the motor running, I was putting it into gear with the engine rev'd up a bit. Looking back, this probably wasn't a good idea....After that, I put some sea foam through the gas, and that cleared everything out and it was idling perfectly. Running like a dream. 2 trips later, I was going along full speed, and all of a sudden, it kicked out of gear completely. Prop would not engage. Put it in reverse, worked for about 30 seconds, and the same thing happened to the reverse gear....Had to paddle my 16' boat back to the boat launch. I'm thinking I probably chipped a gear tooth, and that small piece of metal finally caused some damage in there.....Would anyone be able to tell me how to take the lower end case off that so I could inspect the gears? Is this something I should have a professional do, or can I do it myself? Thanks a lot!

Did it jump, like it hit a log?

My guess would be a bad clutch dog.

Get a manual before you do any disassembly. Gear case comes apart with the 6 screws holding the bottom half (with the fin) to the top half.
If the gear oil comes out milky or has water in it, it would be the time to reseal the gearcase.

Thanks a lot! I'll take those 6 screws out, and see what I find. Hopefully it's nothing too expensive. If I need to replace the clutch dog, pinion gear, or reverse/forward gear, do I need to take the whole lower end apart? Or can I just do it after removing the lower half of the gear case along with the pivot pin? Thanks!

Like I said, DON'T TAKE ANYTHING APART UNTIL YOU HAVE A MANUAL.
