Took my new Lowrance Elite 5X fishfinder out for a test run yesterday. Seemed to be working OK, but a few strange things showed up on the screen. I don't know enough about fishfinders to be able to determine if these strange things are: normal background stuff; result of improper transducer mounting; motor interference with the transducer cable; or, improper settings on the control panel.
Is there any source for pictures (preferable) or descriptions of anormalities caused by the above situations?
For example, at one point I had a depth reading, but nothing but a yellow sawtooth pattern on the screen. This may have been the result of my ignorance in pushing buttons on the unit because when I finally figured out how to restore the factory defaults I got a display more like I was expecting (even saw some arches that may have actually been fish).
I also saw the surface noise described in the manual - but not sure if it was excessive.
Finally, when I had what I thought to be a "normal" display there were a few small clumps of colored pixels near the bottom - is this structure or interference or normal background noise?
So, I'm looking for something that will tell me: "when you see this, it is a result of __________ ."
