I took the lower unit off my 93 Force 120 to make sure I didn't have any clogs with the water cooling system. After putting the lower unit back on, I ran the motor with the muffs on. While testing the motor to make sure it would still go into gear, I can hear a clanking while going into forward and reverse. I did not do anything to the lower end except remove it. My question is if the shift shaft got loosened could that be the cause of the noise. The clanking does not last longer than the initial act of putting it into gear. Any suggestions.

Slow gear engagement will grind/clank and round off the dog ears. Shift with manly authority and it should clunk. Like a Harley Davidson shifting gears. Clunk is normal and good, grind is bad.

Only thing that worries me is I don't remember it making that noise before

Tried it on the water yet? Things sound different in the air.

Check the oil?
Then when shifting:straight into gear. Slow shifting will grind gears and make a mess.
Mine does it out of water too.J
