I bought a fiberglass boat last fall, but now need a little help... Its a 16ft fiberglass boat with a '74 135 evinrude outboard. ive got it completely stripped

Question 1...
I want to re-paint the entire boat, but not sure how to go about doing it. I only plan on owning the boat for a couple years top, so i dont need top of the line paint thats going to last 30 years or something. Ive heard of people using automotive spray cans, but dont really want to go that cheap. What would be a good paint for a fiberglass boat? I dont have really anywhere to paint it other than my driveway, so a roll on paint would be best. I was thinking on doing a yellow and black 2 tone, but wasnt sure if black is a good idea or not. if not black than maybe blue and yellow. What paint for the outboard?

Question 2....
I have everything off except the outboard. I plan on building a little stant to hold it (with wheels) but how do i get it from the boat to the stand?

Question 3...
how do i disconnect the cables from the throttle to the outboard, to be able to remove it? also how do i disconnect the steering line?

Question 4... anyone know where to get a cheap fuel tank? looking for around 20gal

Question 5... Whats the easiest way to paint the bottom? I dont have a lot of room to work with. so would i be able to paint it on the trailer, the roll it forward or backwards and paint the spots that got missed where the rollers were? or is there an easier way?

when i got it...

Lots of Guys on here use Good old Rustoleum Professional Industrial Oil Based and Roll it on. There is even a Hardener for it . You can by Rattle can Evinrude OMC paint for the motor. Make sure and use Self Etching Primer for any BARE spots on the Aluminum.

Question 2....

Question 3...
how do i disconnect the cables from the throttle to the outboard, to be able to remove it? Should be Linkage on the motor to be disconnected.

also how do i disconnect the steering line? Big Nut on the tube.

Yeah, I stand corrected, For some reason I was thinking 75 HP NOT 135hp. I guess Dislexia set in with the 74' model. Sorry Bout that!!!! You're gunna need a tree, a cherry picker, or a REAL BIG STRONG COUPLE of FRIENDS:eek:

Re: Help with project

that motor should have a lifting ring under the hood. I removed my '73 85 a couple times and my '81 90 using a simple cheap come-along from Harbor Freight attached to some sturdy shelving framing in the back of my garage. I just let it hang there while I worked on the boat.

Re: Help with project

Use the Rustoleum Professional Primer. Sand With 180 Grit. Use a Scotch Brite Pad to scuff between coats. Thin Color Coat no more than 15% using Acetone. Use Valspar Acrylic Enamel Hardener 2% per quart of Rustoleum but DON'T add it until you're gunna use it ALL. 1oz per 1/2 qt. If you're gunna spray it you'll need a HVLP gun with a 1.8 mm tip.

Re: Help with project

thanks for the tips!! do i add the hardener to primer? Or just color coat? What type of roller should i use? A foam or fine roller? Will adding acetone help paint create even layer to hide texture from roller? should i clear coat when done or not? Thanks again

Re: Help with project

No hardener to primer. Foam Rollers. Acetone helps flow and also helps drying. No clear Coat needed, Rusty is Very HIGH gloss and the Hardener will do the rest.

Re: Help with project

I started priming yesterday. Got 1 some-what decent coat on... Still need to get under the rollers. Also have to touch up the tight spaces (forgot to get a brush) and remove motor and get around there.

I have another question... How long should i wait to do another coat of paint if i cant do them in a short time frame? If i do 1 coat, is it ok to do another a few hours later or should i wait a day or 2 or 10? Thanks

I'd read the can for this answer. It's usually "recoat within X hours or after XX hours".

Havent got much done with the boat lately... My first child was born over the weekend and she is in the NICU because she was small, so we've been kinda busy with that. I did build and engine stand yesterday though. Didnt have anyone that could help lift that beast onto the stand though. I un-bolted it, tilted it so it was laying on the back of the boat, slid cart underneath, and lowered it onto the stand by myself... That thing weighs a TON!!!! but i got it so its ok. Need a new plan to get it back onto the boat though...

I do have a question though. The outboard is a '74 evinrude 135. The controls are a little crusty. Is there a certain one that i need to buy to replace it, or are they pretty much universal?

1 more question... Any idea where to get a cheap (if there is such a thing) Power tilt/trim... I dont know much about them and cant really find any. Its a pain tring to lift the motor up/down...
