I picked up this Mercury Model 40 4hp. At a garage sale a few years ago. I recently broke the prop. 3 blade and looks to be made of plastic.

I'm having issues finding the correct prop. I'm fairly new to outboards, and have never had to even remove a prop in the past. Can anyone help a guy out?

There was more than one version of the 40(4hp). One or Two cylinder? A model # would help.

2 cylinder

looks like the one that was on it was spinning counterclockwise.

Thanks for the assistance.

if it isnt drive pin? I imagine that would be splined? How do I tell the difference once the old prop is off?

also the link stats a clockwise spin. Mine spins freely counterclockwise. Does that matter? I imagine it would.

again....thanks! I'm pretty new to outboards. Especially the lower end.

Can you upload a pic of it? Once the prop is removed you will be able see if the driveshaft is splined.

Removed it today. The shaft is splined.

Number on Prop: 48-70453A1 7 (no diameter or pitch stamping)

3 blade

Its looks to be made of plastic. (Light blue in color)

That number supercedes to 48-86903A1. Both numbers are NLA, but it gives you another part number to search for. Try eBay, or one of the outboard salvage yards.
