i just bought a 115 hp mercury 6 cly. its a 79 picked up really really cheap guy said it ran and shifted when it was last on the boat. so i tryed looking up parts cuz the starter is shot wont turn hard enough to crank engine over or even engage it. the serial number is 5240609 but all the web sites i look for starts after 530000 something so i dont know what to do to find parts should i just go with the closest one but the diagrams show some diff parts like 3 coils when i only have one on this engine. any advice would help me greatly thanks.

Probably 95% of all starter problems is electrical. Is the battery fully charged? Check all your connections. They must be very clean and tight. Check the lugs very closely for any signs of corrosion. They can corrode inside where you can't see it and cause the problem you are having. If you know how to do a voltage drop test you could check them that way. Another way would be to temporally substitute the cables with jumper cables. If all the cables have been confirmed good, try jumping the starter solenoid. Just because it clicks does NOT mean its good. If you are sure the solenoid is good have your battery load tested, regardless of age. This brings you to the starter itself. Remove it and have it tested by your local auto electric shop. They can rebuild it for you if needed and save you some money. Let us know how you make out.

well i dont have the engine hooked up to a boat so i got it on a stand in my garage i paid 50 bucks for the whole 115 hp motor lol. so i unhooked the cable from the starter and iv been jumping it with a batter and it wouldnt engage so i manualy engaged it to the flywheel and with all plugs out it dosnt have enough power to crank the engine over when the compression test is in one clynder. so i know its not any other wires and iv tried it with two batters even took the one out of my truck and tried it with i know is good. so its somewhere in the starter.

on the serial number note i starts with 5240609 and i havnt found a website to under 530 for the serial number to see a parts diagram i have a 65hp mercury thats been having problems starting some days it does some days it dont so i was looking up part numbers to see if the coils matched so i could swap them around to see why my 74 65 hp mercury wasnt starting.
