hey guys. i really need help with this?. i have a yamaha 50.. i have checked the ignition switch..stop switch..and gave the battery a good charge. still the engine wont turn over. as i stated before the motor will turn over when i bypass the relay and hook to starter. i tested the relay today. i am getting 12 volts on the relay side that is coming from battery but when i turn ignition switch i get nothing on the terminal that goes into starter. doesnt the 12 volts suppose to go to the other side when ignition is turned on.. is there a way i can byass relay to see if thats it. thx for help

Re: help with starter relay problems?

Catfishing, you have a bad starter solenoid. The high amp side of the solenoid acts like a battery post terminal for other 12 volt loads. The solenoid has a low amp circuit that energizes when you turn the key switch to start the motor. It connects the hi amp side (which is where the battery cable hooks to) and allows the starter to get hi amps to turn the motor over. There is a plunger in the solenoid that goes bad sometimes. Replace and make sure everything is tight. good luck

Re: help with starter relay problems?

I would suggest a resistance check on the starter solenoid. Get a multimeter and set it on ohms test. Place the positive lead on one side of the hi amp and the black lead on the other side of the solenoid. You should get an OL or OFL. Make sure you do not run power through the solenoid while doing this or you will smoke your meter.
