Having never done timing before I do not understand what the reading means. I am using a $99.00 digital timing light from Autozone. My motor has three marks on the flywheel with the middle one marked white. In taking the reading at cranking rpm, the timing light shows the two white marks line up with a reading of 0.00 I think this is not right. Clymers manual shows "cranking" should be at 28 degrees BTDC. Also which direction should timing screw be turned to advance, counter clockwise or clockwise?

Re: Help with Timing 1987 Force 125

Oops. I am wrong. Now I see another single mark on the flywheel that was not white marked. It appears to be the TDC mark. So where the three marks are close together the middle mark is 28 degree BTDC and the single mark is TDC. With the digital timing light set at 28.00, the single mark on the flywheel lines up with the white mark on the engine. So I guess my timing is correct after all?

Static timing should be at wot, cranking and should be 30d.
the 3 marks are L-R 32-30-28.At wot running 5500rpm it should be 32d.I think.J

Thanks JerrYJerry, however Clymers is saying setting should be 28 at cranking and 30 at dynamic WOT running. But clymers is not always correct so do you have other data? Also it seems hard to get the timing exactly right on the mark and the distance between 28 and 30 is tiny. Is it important to hit it right on the nose?

I think the factory manual calls for 30. If it's close that's the best your gonna do.
Static timing is to get you in the ballpark. Then your supposed to time it at WOT.J
