I have to pull the flywheel on my '78 Evinrude 85 to deal with some ignition problems. Can anyone direct me to a source for the type of puller I need to get the flywheel off. Also, could anyone recommend a good multi meter for outboard/automotive work. Thanks in advance. Joe

Re: Help with tool question

You'll need a flywheel puller whereas you can insert three bolts through it which will be threaded into the three holes you see surrounding the flywheel nut. It should be available at any reliable tool or automotive parts type store.

Note that when re-installing the flywheel, be sure to torque the nut to exactly 105 foot pounds.

Multimeters run in various price ranges. However, the ones that run in the $10.00/$20.00 range will do everything you will ever need... DC/AC volts, Amperes, Ohms.

Can you tell me what size bolts I will need to fit the tapped holes in the flywheel?

Re: Help with tool question

The puller is called a "harmonic balancer puller" and I would suggest getting Gr 8 bolts to go in tapped flywheel holes. They're typically 1/4", but may be finer thread than 1/4-20.

Joe's right about the VOM, any decent one will do.

If you have trouble getting the FW off, use a impact tool (elec or pneu) on the central puller bolt. This eliminates the need for another tool ... a flywheel holder, necessary for removal and installation of the flywheel otherwise.

Re: Help with tool question

Thanks to Jim and Joe for the helpful information. It should be obvious that I haven't removed too many flywheels! Do you know what size the flywheel bolt is? I know it is a little bigger than 1 1/8. I don't mean to pester you with questions, but for someone lacking experience your help is invaluable. For the summer I am keeping my boat about 175 miles from home in Newport RI. Between trying to find places that are open on weekends and trying to find a good hardware or tool store it is amazing how little you can accomplish in a day, a day when you really want to be on the water. I am trying to get everything necessary to tackle my engine problems and minimize the runs to pick up this or that. Again, many thanks.
