I'm currently in the process of adding an additional 5 inches to the transom of my old smokercraft. I'm wondering what sealant/adhesive you recommend to block out the water? The 5200 doesn't say its recommended for metal. Would silicone be fine or is there some sort of marine grade sealant that I could use.

The boat is aluminum and I'm usuing steel for the additional 5 inches of height.

Thank you!

you really should not use steel with aluminum, but if you must, use a butyl caulk like life caulk, or you can use a polyurethane caulk which will also bond well. watch for corrosion at the steel aluminum seam.

Even with the caulk between the two, you think there will still be some corrosion?

I have a 10 in. plate going the width of the transom, 5 inches will be in contact with the aluminum. All I'm looking to do is apply caulk, place the steel in, then wood, then another steel plate.

You will probably be allright just keep an eye on it and of course paint the steel with a good epoxy primer and polyurethane paint. must be your engine is to long? hence the extension?

There is most definately going to be a corrosion issue, you could probably go to any recycling or salvage yard and get a section of aluminum that size for a relatively good deal.

I coated the steel with alkyd paint and there will be 5200 between the two. I have two coats of paint on the steel.
I guess ill try it and if i have to ill do it over...
