I've read a lot of the threads but no one has seemed to ask the question I was hoping to see. I'm in the process of repairing my boat and I've removed the engine, lower unit and bell housing. I've started to remove my transom where it's obviously rotten. I've cut away and removed all of the black wood but I'm only 8" up from the centerline bottom. The wood and fiberglass from here to the top of the transom is in great shape. Do I have to remove the entire transom to replace the rotted wood to insure strength and integrety? Or can i just replace the wood I've removed that is bad? I've also removed the flooring from the bottom of the transom about 2' up from the stern. The stringers all all in excellent shape as well. I hate to remove what I don't have to. Can someone please let me know what I should do do insure that i do it correctly?
Thanks,
alex

"great shape"

uh...does that include dry ?

if so then I would consider leaving it but,
if I was already in there it would come out.

Did the outdrive seal fail?

Re: Help with transom repair

the transom works by distributing the force of the outdrives and engine to the entire stern of the boat and the sides(why you tab) If there is a break in the transom, like adding a new section. It takes away from this effectiveness. Does that 8" include the T hole? pictures might help. Odds are that anything you add will be basically a filler for the hole that you cut the rotten wood out of. So have a look and see how much support the leg will still have afterwards from the good wood that goes all the way to the sides.

It also depends on your love for the boat, if all you want is 1 more season then it will be fine. If you want another 10+ years out of the boat then you should do the entire thing now well you have it stripped down.

Replace the whole thing. There is never a easy way out and you know that.Don't try to take a short cut now. You have the engine out and outdrive off and the bell housing. You are half way there.

What engine do you have and brand ?

Some use the transom as the main motor mount.
