How bad am I screwed? Today I tried changing the lower unit oil on my 94 4.3l v6 Volvo penta sx. I drained the oil from the bottom drain plug, and when trying to remove the top side screw plug the head broke off. I tried to drill it out but it went a little Crooked and ate the thread of the housing. It also went through pretty quick and my drill bit punctured a hole a rubber hose that holds water that is behind the housing. Does anybody know where to get the housing that the top side plug screw is. The hose is a standard rubber hose that can be purchased at auto parts. And how complicated is it to reinstall the new housing?

Download the correct manual from the stickies on the top. That way you will know what you are working on and the correct nomenclature for it. Good luck on the repair.

That plug you tried to remove is a holdover from the OMC days and really doesn't do anything. Not even sure if there is a water jacket behind it.

The plug you were trying to find is behind the rear cover and is the hole were oil comes out when the drive is finally full of oil when pumping in from the bottom.

Might be time to get a Volvo service manual.

Your correct, I took the lower unit out and got to the transom housing and figured out that screw was the water drain and is really doing nothing. Looks like I drilled through this black PVC nipple which I'm getting replaced and once done everything should be just fine. I also found out there is a dipstick on the top of the drive which I will open when filling back gear oil from bottom.

You need to open that one and the one inside that cover I mentioned above. Get the manual and it describes all of this.

So pump from the bottom until it comes out that hole. Reinstall the dipstick and that plug. It will help form a vacuum so that oil doesn't leak out while you pull your oil pump off the bottom hole. Then check your oil level on the dipstick.
