help with year & switch box

could anyone please tell me the year of my motor ? it is a 50 hp. mariner 4 clinder serial# 5964738. and allso ,should their be any voltage at all from any wire going to the switch box with switch key in the on position? thanks much for any help.

Your motor looks to be a 1981 model. I'm assuming the 50hp Mariner is pretty much the same as a 50hp Merc of similar vintage.

To answer your other question, there definitely shouldn't be any voltage on the kill wire (black with yellow stripe) to the switchbox (power pack).

If there is, there's something wrong with the ign switch or trouble in the wiring harness. There's supposed to be an infinite amount of resistance (open circuit) with the key "ON" and with the key "OFF", the switchbox is shorted to ground to kill spark.

All the other leads on the switchbox are going to ignition components which shouldn't have any external voltage applied to them, either. If there is, there's a problem somewhere.

Let us know what's going on with the voltage thing and maybe we can help.
